According to the United Nations 2019 report, the Republic of Chad ranks 11th among the least developed nations in the world. On average, the population has to live on less than three US dollars a day per capita, and 73% of the population has no access to clean drinking water. The adult literacy rate is 53% for men and 36% for women!

This program can support them to take actions for their own prosperity and give them hope.

Education for a Better Future

APRODEPIT is a recognized non-governmental organization with the primary aim of improving the general living conditions of people. It is a Society for the Promotion and Development of Fish Farming located in Sarh, a town on the Chari River in the south of Chad.

Ecology as Basis

The harmful practices in the region, have resulted in decreasing water levels in rivers and lakes causing the disappearing of various aquatic species in the Chari River. As a result of this drastic reduction of fish stock, a substantial part of the population lost their important livelihood.

Lack of knowledge about the ecological conditions for the conservation of the stock was the main reason for this disaster. Illegal fishing methods such as using close-meshed nets and even dynamite meant the end of the fish stock. The water level sank and the fish almost died out. Something has to be done to save the life in the river.

Nature and Population Benefit

The founder of the APRODEPIT organization, “Kosse Malle (†)” started fish farming in Bongor in 1980. He used his knowledge acquired in a fish farm training some years before. With the help of one employee, they excavated two ponds and bred about 3000 Tilapia fish. The fish growth was very fast and they multiplied rapidly.

The success proved to him that he can save the region. He founded APRODEPIT with eleven other families to do fish farming. Besides, the company has specialized in fish preservation through drying and smoking.

Great Potential

APRODEPIT launched a learning program for the training of fish farming entrepreneurs. By improving people’s knowledge about fish farming, they caught local recourse’s potential and used their capacity in the projects. Also, they saved the fish population in the region by using new technologies and setting protection zones on-site. Currently, 143 teams consisting of 98 men’s and 45 women’s groups are already working in the Sarh.

Sustainability in Many Areas

Prevention of forest clearing, the protection of wildlife, the improvement of school education, and the end of discrimination against women are other areas that the APRODEPIT organization has also laid great foundations on and all have come to fruition increasingly. Furthermore, a school and literacy classes were set up, and it is now up to the Chad people to follow the organization’s traces for a happier future.
